Mudeford Quay House – Kitchen

Mudeford Quay House - Kitchen

by Dream Design

The client wanted a showpiece kitchen for a unique roundhouse that was to be built on the water’s edge at Mudeford in Dorset. The kitchen had to look fantastic but maximise the potential to enjoy the view whilst preparing food or being sat at the breakfast bar sipping a Gin & Tonic. The client also wanted to incorporate a separate drinks/bar area if at all possible.

Inspired by the round building and the coastal location, We designed the Andrew James bespoke island to sweep from the circular staircase enclosure to reflect the shape of a windsurf sail with the breakfast bar slightly elevated, representing the board. We then emphasised this curved line by specifying an illuminated bulkhead detail to the ceiling above and change from tiles to wood on the floor. To further accentuate the beautiful shape of the island, we chose to use macassar ebony book matched veneers laid horizontally and finished in high gloss lacquer so the grain flowed along the length of the island. So nothing broke the line, we designed a recessed handle with full height door panels on the outside with pan and utensil drawers to the inside.

For the tall appliance/storage bank, we specified SieMatic cabinets in matt lacquer to blend in with the walls and allow the island to take centre stage.

Fortunately we were involved early in the project so were able to influence the window sizes and positions as well as the internal wall positions. The island design allowed me to increase the amount of glass to maximise the outlook whilst still enabling me to fulfil the client’s requirement of a separate bar area.
