The Client’s Brief

This luxury apartment is situated in the hills of Canford Cliffs overlooking the peninsular of Sandbanks in Poole. The client’s brief was to design a kitchen with an art deco theme incorporating nautical accents to echo the coastal location. The architectural style of the building provided a light and challenging open plan space.

The Designer’s Challenge

Spatial Design
The main challenge was how to deal with the 4 structural pillars, 2 rectangular pillars on the back wall and 2 round pillars in the middle of the room. I created a U-shaped island linking the round pillars, which gave definition to the different areas with dining to one side, living on the other and incorporating a bar in the middle. This enabled the cook to interact with people in the different zones or just enjoy the view out to Brownsea island while preparing food.

Ambience
The client loved the Light pilasters, which are part of the Andrew James Fusion range but the rest of the furniture was specially commissioned to achieve the Art Deco flavour. By combining American Black Walnut with Sycamore, I was able to highlight the period detailing. The suspended ceiling with fibrous plaster cornice detail served to further define the kitchen space and give purpose to the structural columns.
