Branksome Apartment

The Client Brief

The apartment has a large, but irregular shaped open plan space for the kitchen and living area with floor to ceiling glass doors and panels on the front elevation to appreciate the stunning views. Coupled with pale porcelain tiled floors, this gave a very light open space.

The Designer's Challenge

by Andrew Rizza, Design Director, Dream Design

Spatial Design

The visual impact as you enter the room is the view, and nothing should detract from that so I ensured that no furniture would be placed to interrupt the eye-line.

The dining area was positioned for maximum appreciation of the views. I also felt the space needed to incorporate a study area with book-casing and a desk as there was not a separate room given over for this function.

Key to making this large open space work ergonomically was to de-mark the zones without building walls. To this end I specified an L-shaped sofa to separate the lounge area from the study. The kitchen island and breakfast bar formed the division between the kitchen and the dining space.

I wanted to keep the lightness of the space but add some warmth and depth. The wenge finish to the study furniture provided this. I also specified a casual style sofa in a warm fabric with a deep pile rug and a dining set with dark wenge legs to give contrast to the floor and blend with the study furniture.

Principal Bedroom Suite

The light open ambience of this apartment continues through to the principal bedroom suite, which again features floor to ceiling glass doors and panels. The walk-in dressing room enables all clothes to be easily viewed and accessed whilst avoiding the necessity for any tall furniture in the bedroom area. Adding a low wall provided a lobby area between the dressing room and bathroom, for a dressing table positioned to appreciate the view. This left the rest of the spacious bedroom area for a sumptuous bed and a relaxing chaise longue.
